Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized endoscopic procedure offered at GastroExperts for diagnosing and treating problems related to the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. It combines an endoscope, a long, flexible viewing instrument, with fluoroscopy, a type of X-ray imaging.
A highly skilled gastroenterologist guides the endoscope through the mouth and throat, down the esophagus and stomach, and into the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
A contrast dye is injected through the catheter into the ducts, highlighting them on the fluoroscopy images..
During the same procedure, if necessary, small instruments can be passed through the endoscope to perform therapeutic interventions like removing gallstones, widening narrowed ducts, or placing stents for drainage.
Once positioned, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is passed through the endoscope and into the opening of the bile and pancreatic ducts.
.
The gastroenterologist uses fluoroscopy to examine the ducts for abnormalities like blockages, narrowing, stones, or tumors.
Our team at GastroExperts is comprised of highly skilled and experienced gastroenterologists who are experts in performing ERCP. We utilize advanced technology and prioritize patient safety to ensure the best possible outcomes. If you have questions about ERCP or require a consultation to determine if it’s right for you, contact GastroExperts to schedule an appointment with one of our gastroenterologists.
